" Is there any specific method

" Is there any specific method for troubleshooting gauges? My temp gauge will not work, and before I rip it out and fire up my multimeter I was hoping for some info. Really just wondering if there is an easy way to check if its the sending unit or the gauge itself. No hurry though, I have to replace the stern drive impeller first. Any suggestions would be appreciated....

" Quick & dirty way to T/S . with ign. key in run position short the sender wire to ground on engine block. If gauge moves all the way to hi temp. area ~ Gauge & wiring harness OK.replace sender. If not , wiring or gauge at fault. Suggest a quick contiouity test on wiring before investing in new gauge. "
