How often should this filter be changed? What is involved in changing this filter? I just purchased a '80 merc 898.

"The manual recommends every year. If you are buying fairly consistently clean gas you can get away with much less frequently. My last one I ran some 5 years or so; forgot when I last changed it.
Since you have just bought the boat I would say good idea to change it, then you know where you are."

"At this stage in the land of ozz our fuel suppliers are only allowed to sell at a rate of mix no greater than 10% so we generaly dont have the problems you guys may get from high percentage mixtures.
A few years ago we went through a period before Government legislation where we were getting high percentage mixtures of Zylene, Tolulene and Ethanol in our fuels and boy didnt we have some problems with rubber components for a while.
Our fuel generally speaking now is pretty good and so we tend to get realy good life out of fuel filters.
Helps if you find a good reliable fuel supplier and stick to them if you can, if you can trust your source, you can trust your filters to last a long time.

"I would suggest that you star

"I would suggest that you start off with a new Filter Element and then change at least once a year prior to the season. The interval after that would depend on many factors, condition of Fuel Tank, Fuel used, Hours used, etc.
If this is a Racor style spin-on filter there is a bowl on the bottom where the water collects from the filtering. Use a small bright flashlight to shine inside the bowl and inspect, if there is watewr then it can be drained.
To change the Element I would suggest that you remove the Drain Plug for the boat in order to help drain heavy fumes and turn the Battery Switch to the off position and turn off any other electrical items that could produce a spark (Bilge Pump, Shore Power, etc.). Keep a good Fire Extinguisher close by. Next you should have a Fuel Sut-Off valve at the Fuel Tank, close this valve in order to stop the flow of Fuel. Now you should be able to spin-off the element similar to an Oil Filter. Replace the Element per the instructions provided using new Seals. Be careful with and wipe up any spilt Fuel and make sure the area in well ventialted.
GASOLINE is FLAMABLE and VENTILATION is IMPORTANT.
Cheers,
Steve"

Here is a handy tip for changi

Here is a handy tip for changing the filter. Hold the bottom half of a cut off 2 liter (quart) plastic pop container around the filter as you loosen and unscrew it. This will catch the inevitable spillage and let you quickly get the spillage and filter out of the bilge area. This is much better than spilling gas in the bilge. Works great for bottom mounted oil filters too.

I do the Same Thing with a Glad Freezer Baggie.......

Crack the Filter Loose, Slip the Baggie around it,.. Unscrew it, Drop it into the Baggie,+ Seal it Up......"

"Love the freezer bag idea, very clever, the bigger size ones would be good for oil filters too.
I like it !
