What do you guys do to protect your gas tank from rust? Mine still look good and may be somewhat protected by the oil mix.

"Bill, there is a number of gas tank "sealing" products on the market designed to protect metal tanks from corrosion/rust and the new fuels.

I am not aware of any marketed specifically for marine applications, but most list auto, marine use etc..

I'm not sure I would go through the hassle though if there wasn't even the start of a problem (drain the tank, dry it out, seal it, let that set/dry). But I use a composite tank and don't worry about rust....

Personal choice though...

I'm sure others will share their opinion/experience"

I would replace the metal tank

I would replace the metal tank with a composite/plastic tank immediately!! One can be picked up for anywhere from $15 dollars up to $45 dollars depending on size/shape. This is a good investment as you don't have problems with rust/deterioration and in most cases you can get up to a 12 gallon tank that is removable!!

"Bill, The latent water in a metal tank causes the rust. If you run a premix of oil and gas in a tank, and you keep the water out of the tank, the only rust will be from the outside in. A tank with straight gas, and no water will last a good long time as well. Of course if you put a steel tank in the floor of the boat, and cover it over and run in salt water, it will rust thru from the outside."

"Problem is, all gas has a trace amount of water in it......any gas that sits for any period of time in a metal container can still cause rust on the inside. If this container is exposed to heat of anytime and then cools off in the evenings will cause the water in the fuel, even at trace amounts, to condensate. It's inevitable! Best bet, is to never store fuel for a long period of time in a metal container and replace to a composite one. This eliminates any risk.
