I have a 1998 40-50 HP 4-Stroke Mercury out board motor on my pontoon boat I bough last year (Aug 2010).* I was trimming the motor (Friday May 20, 2011)*to lock it down and I noticed gas coming out of the engine.* So I trimmed it back down and took off the cover to investigate.* I could not find where the gas was coming from at first but when I trimmed the motor back up I noticed the gas coming out of the air filter.* So I started to take the spark plugs out.* When I took out the #4 plug gas came pouring out.* My engine has carborators so I thought the*float valve maybe the problem.* But I had a simular problem when I was preparing my motor for this year.* When I started to prepare my motor for this year, I started to clean out the fogging oil from the clyinders.* When I removed the number one spark plug fluid came pouring out.* I though it might be gas but didn't know for sure.* I also changed the engine oil and found more oil than what was required.* Since the boat sat for several months I figured gas might have leaked through the pistons into the crank case.* Also,*one day I found the gas tank had expanded so much so that the cover*had raised off the pontoon deck considerablely.* At first I thougt somebody was tampering with my boat.* After I removed the gas cap and released the pressure the cover went back down to normal.* I have used the boat several times this year before finding the problem Friday and have used the boat again Saturday, May 21, without any problems.* This is the first boat I ever owner and I have no experience with boat or boat motors so if I miss speak please forgive me.* I was thinking the pressure in the gas tank might be the issue with the problems I am experiencing.* Could the pressure from the gas tank force gas through the carb into the pistons?* Could anyone share their thoughts or experiences on this problem.
