Gas/Oil consumpation

Have a 1997 150 HP evinrude intruder...recently had all six carbs rebuilt because of leaks and the VRO pump replaced. Marine mech got the engine running good in the shop but suggested I tune the fuel/air adjustment screws on the water.
He suggested I turn in all 6 screws in to a stop then out 3.5 turns. After making these adjustments the engine would bog on takeoff. Turned them all out another 1/2 turn, got better but still hesitated. Turned out another 1/2 turn, got even better. Then out another 1/2 turn to 5.0. Engine did fine on takeoff and when running but I thought I sensed a bit of hesitation so turned them out to 5.5. My mind may have been playing games by this time!
Engine runs fine but smokes like an old freight train when idleing and some on takeoff. Have been using evinrude synthetic oil because its suppose to smoke less and lub better. Major problem it the engine is using a lot of gas and oil (I mean a lot more than before all this was done!) Is this thing to rich?

well, as luck would have it i cant find my manual but it seems to ne you start with something like 2.5 turns then ajust them in gear at idle out in the lake. not at the dock. Im sure someone can help you with the procedure. If not buy a service manual. it outlines the procedure.

ok if you have a 150 the manual says start at 5 turns out. if you have a 150jle/wt start at 4 turns. the book says run in forward at idle speed for 3 minutes not tied to dock.. it says if the engine sneezes and backfire its too lean. turn screw counterclockwise 1/8 turn until you reach highest idle. repeat this procedurefor all carbs. if it running rich, the engine will run rough and unsteady. if this is the case turn needle clockwise 1/8 turn until you reach highest rpm then repeat for all carbs. the book says wait 15 seconds at each turn.
