Gas Hog!! 70hp evinrude

Hi,

I have a 1976 70hp Evinrude on a 15' tri-hull (pretty light boat). I am surprised at how much gas this motor is using. I don't do much running around the lake, just from the launch ramp, across the lake to my fishing spot, then a little cruising around and back. This thing sucks down a 6 gallon tank of fuel like nothin'. What would cause an outboard to be so inefficient? Or is this normal? Granted, 2 stroke motors use a lot of fuel but this seems excessive. Any thoughts?

I had a 79 70hp 'rude and remember it wasn't that bad. Are you sure someone isn't visiting the midnight fuel supply on you? No pin hole in the tank?

if the motor is performing as it did new you should use about 7 gallons per hour wot...back off to 3500 or so rpms and this should improve...it may be time to look at a few basics on that motor...compression and amount of spark etc...carbs...

I have a 73' 65HP on a 17' tri-hull. I bought a 9 gal tank last year. We ski off of it, with some heavy weights.
We generally use about 5-6 gallons an outing. My boat weighs 1200 lbs. I also have a 76' 70 HP waiting in dry dock for my 73' to quit, but it never does.
