Garden hose fitting on old Johnson?

I just got done flushing my motor after a day on the intercoastal. While waiting for the barrel to fill up I got to wondering if a hose fitting could be installed in the leg of this old motor. It's a 1973 85 hp Johnson. Has anyone ever tried this? I know newer motors come with them. Would the water run out of the bottom faster than the garden hose could replenish it? Somebody has to have tried this?

Appreciate the reply, but what I'm talking about is not muffs. I have the exact ones and they are worthless. I am talkin about a hose fitting installed INTO the side of the leg. Will it work on these older motors? I have seen newer motors with a hose fitting on them. Is there something different about them or will that same fitting work on the older models?

Surely someone has tried this. Just wondering if the water goes straight into the leg and the intakes are open if too much water would run out and the pump starve for cooling water.

Thanks kimcrwbr1, I did a little more research myself and found out exactly what you just said. It was just an idea to try and save some time when everyone's tired after a day on the water. I guess I'll stick to the barrel as I don't like muffs. I can't get them to seal good enough, most of the water shoots out the sides and the water pump never gets any.

I guess everybody has his own opinion, but lots and lots of people use muffs with no problem. If water "shoots" or squirts out (with pressure) around them, it is being applied under pressure to the water pump also.
