Gapless plugs

Well, I finally got around to working on my 83' 115hp Mercury. I never
laid eyes on gapless plugs before, how do I clean or know if they are
Beyond use?

I prefer gapped plugs if the option exists (some models specify gapped or gapless options).

In most of my older OMC manuals they indicate that gapless plugs are best used in "sustained high speed" applications.

Like Jeff I don't really try and read the gapless plugs on the one motor I run them on. For the cost of plugs ALL of my outboards get new plugs every second season - maybe I'm wasting a little money, but I'm never guessing. But I do buy my plugs in the case lot from a discount supplier - retail prices can add up fast with multi-cylinder models.

To summarize: Gapless plugs do NOT overheat and cause destructive preignition--that's good! Conventional plugs can, but you can 'read' the fuel/ air ratio with them, which is nice for getting the jetting correct.

To wit: Put the regular ones in until she's 'burnin' right', then put the gapless ones in.

I knew a guy,who has now gone to the great blue ocean in the sky, who had a '73 Merc500 with the original gapless champion plugs and using her regularly up to four years ago,and are still there.

There was no piece attached to the plug to go over the electrode.
I never seen plugs like these.
I'll clean them with contact cleaner and test spark them.
