How does the fwd rev ment to w

How does the fwd rev ment to work in a 1974 50 hp merc by gears or by the carby. Throttle aside i cant get it into neutral or i think something is missing i just bought the boat and dying to get it in the water.. Also i put a new water pump kit in (above the assembly) and aint getting water coming out the top half of the out board i put a water hose on the water pipe above pump and nothing is blocked.

The problem could have been created when you put the water pump and the lower unit back together.
Did you run the motor before replacing the water pump? Did it run properly then?
The water pump is straightforward.

"Thanks alex the problem was when i put the lower unit back on, the rev and fwd rod wasnt aligned properly. The water pump base was leaking and the main problem was i trimmed the impella wings WRONG yeah i know now.The one i removed was ripped to shreds so i just assumed it just had to fit in not twist in."
