fwd and rev backwards after LU re-assembly

1971 9.8hp model 110 merc splines only line up with shifter in reverse. After assy shifter is backwards. Can not assemble with neutral/neutral or fwd/fwd. The shift shaft blank spline doesn't line up with shift gear on motor. Also, the shift shaft will only lineup one way into LU, that being blank spline towards water pump or prop. Re-assembly is easy but, It's all backwards. HELP!!

Is this a replacement lower unit from an older motor ?-Post more details on what work was done on this lower unit.

Are you sure it wasn't that way all along? Most of them actually came that way from the factory (for some dumb assed reason).

Try this: See which way the shift lever that will allow full throttle (which is only allowed in Forward). Bet it's correct as you assembled it--backassward.

Jeff

PS: The position of the shift lever on the shaft should NOT be vertical in neutral--more like just above horizontal. Those fragile handles (ie: easily broken) get replaced by those who put them on wrong, further confusing the issue.

Wiring burnt-up. Replaced wiring and new impeller. MT LU of water and filled with new lube. Assembled and took to lake. Shift handle in back position (rev) and motor ran in fwd. It did run good in this position. But, backasswards. THEN I noticed only start in fwd or rev but not in neutral. I think that's because throttle can be half way open to start. Merc started and idled in test tank great. I'm confused!

Don't blame you! Rip off the device that prevents pulling the starter in gear and away you go. Don't need it anyhow--nanny state mentality.

FYI Shift handle in wrong position. On this older model rev is fwd down and fwd is just past vertical. Jeff is correct in the positioning of Handle. That takes care of that problem, but have a new one now. Will put up new post for help. Thanks everyone. Dan
