"I took my spark plugs out to take a look (troubleshooting - other thread) and noticed that the spark plugs do not have a point protruding from the center and no metal tab arching to the top???
They are flat, completely flat. The center "point" is flush with the surrounding chromed exterior and is surrounded by a ~1/8" groove (insulating material in there I suppose).

Is this normal? The engine runs pretty well - so they obviously work. Where does the spark arch to, anywhere around the outside, the piston???"

I don't know how they work

I don't know how they work but I just replaced mine and had some of the same thoughts - they do work though. Nice that you don't have to gap!

"You not only can't "gap" them, you can't read the plug temperatures to get a rich/ lean indication, which is why I toss 'em out and use regular type plugs.

They are called "surface gap" plugs, and the opinions on them are divided.

"Surface gap plugs are recommended by most of the mfg's for "sustained high speed operations" - so most of your performance or otherwise higher horsepower motors.

Gapped plugs, alternately, are recommended for lower speed (trolling etc).

Unfortunately, there is nothing right in the middle.

I'm with JB on this one - stick with what the "factory" calls for - and if they don't give a "gapped" option, leave the surface gaps in..."
