"You are correct in that the Volvo Penta exhaust manifolds were not intended to be included in the Closed System loop.
If you were to use the Merc manifolds, you may possibly have Riser-to-Y pipe alignment issues. You may be able to make things align....I am not sure, as I have not done this!
Now, you used the word "Converted", so may I assume that this is a retro-fit?
If so, there is an issue that you may not be considering or aware of:
**Converting a previously Raw Water Cooled engine to a Closed Cooling system poses the risk of potential water jacket "rust scale" and Heat Exchanger contamination!
The rust scale that will eventually come loose (certainly not over night), will settle in/around the outside of tube bundle and eventually hinder the H/E's abiltiy to remove heat from the engine coolant! Again, it won't happen over-night.... but keep an eye on this.
Unfortunately, this side of the H/E's tube bundle is inaccessible by the average Joe!
So, a prior engine chemical flushing and neutralizing of the block/heads may be a good start!
A serviceable screen system of some sort in the coolant return path would be another good thing.
Believe me, I'm all for the Closed Cooling systems! I will not own a marine engine without! Just don't want you to have trouble with yours.
