"OK so I decided I wanted a fuel/water seperator with the clear plasitc reservior on the bottom. The guy at the boat supply store says I can't use it on an I/O boat because the plastic reservior will get hot and melt. But I have a place to mount it away from the exhaust side of the engine in a place that doesn't get hot, warm at the most. I want to see how much water is coming out of my fuel tank. Has anybody installed one of these Racor type water seperators in a sterndrive boat with any problems?"

"I have had a Racor mounted on the bulkhead of my bilge for ten years without issues. It is directly in front of my crank pulley about six inches away.

The guy at the supply store is correct, the plastic bowls are only USCG approved for outboard engines.

I would do a risk analysis of the proposed mounting location and make your own decision. My thought is if the bilge gets hot enough to melt the plastic bowl you already have a serious situation on your hands."
