I have a new volvo penta 4.3 g

I have a new volvo penta 4.3 gxi engine that after about 15-20 engine hours developed a high pitched whining noise after the engine was running about 20 minutes. Service tech diagnosed the problem as the high pressure fuel pump over heating and are going to replace it. Anyone else have this problem? What might cause this besides just a faulty fuel pump?
Thanks

"i'm kinda having the same problem. my fuel pumps might are not getting fuel to my fuel filter, as soon as my fuel filter runs dry it dies. didn't get the high pitch squeel you did though."

it took me 1.44 to fix mine. it was the anti-siphon valve that wasn't letting any gas through.

my fuel pump worked fine. Had it not been for the noise I would not have noticed a problem. the high pressure fuel pump was over heating and as I gather a potential fire hazard

"Have V/P 5.0FI 1996 - 260 hrs. Motor started missing at mid to high speed. Slowed down and ran fine but as soon as speed increased stared missing again. After some thought, realized boat had been sitting for several months in Central Florida with 3/4 full tank of fuel. AH HA, water in fuel tank - replaced fuel filter with a Sierra fuel/water seperator type. Fired engine and begin hearing the whistling noise, like others above are hearing. THEN touched the electric fuel pump and it was hot! Within minutes, heard a click/snap sound and the circuit breaker on the fuel pump flipped, engine died. waited a few mins and reset the breaker, started engine and kept my hand on the fuel pump - again became REAL HOT.. Shut er down immediately.

Any suggestions from you guys??? New fuel pump? other tests to make sure?"

Check that the anti-syphon valve in the fuel tank is not stuck and therefore causing an obstruction in the fuel suction line.

"Ok, I removed the fuel line from the nipple fitting and then removed the nipple itself. I can not see where there is any sort of anti-syphon valve (or ball bearing). Do I need to remove the fitting that goes directly into the tank?
Thanks for your help!!

"Not sure how your arrangement is, but here is a picture of what anti-syphon valve looks like:

One test you can do is to get an outboard fuel hose with a bulb, sitck in into the barbed fitting on your fuel tank, then try to suck fuel while depressing the bulb several times. If the bulb recovers its shape quickly after you depress it and the fuel flows freely through the discharge, then there is no obstruction in that area."

"In relation to my problem of

"In relation to my problem of the overheated fuel pump, the service tech did say there could be some debris clogging the water cooling inlet to the fuel pump causing it to overheat. They will check for that when they install the new pump. As far as the source of the debris he said possibly some gunk got into the cooling system by being sucked from a silty or weedy part of the lake, or??"

"El Pescador, that pict is exactly what I have but when removed it has a clean bore, nothing in it. Maybe it was already removed??

Hayes, keep us up to date on your situation as I didn't even know there was any water cooling going on there. I'll have to look at it a little closer but I didn't see any "water connections" on it.."

"A follow up on supposed overheating of fuel pump. The fuel pump on the v-p 4.3 gxi is water cooled. the high pressure pump was replaced, but the whining sound is still the same. Will talk to a different tech tomorrow."
