Fuel pump discontinued

I have been trying to locate a fuel pump for my 270 Crusader engines to keep as a spare but it looks like part#41417 has been discontinued. Can a "normal" fuel pump from a car be converted for marine use? What makes the marine pump so special?

The marine has a discharge nipple on it that hooks to the carb. If the diaphragm was to rupture in a marine pump the leaking fuel would be forced up this hose and into the carb. The auto pump would just pour gasoline into the bilge if the diaphragm ruptures.

Convert it to an electric pump.

Airtex and carter both make marine pumps...a really good parts person should be able to order one if not in stock.

As far as differences go, the marine pump has an 'extra' diaphragm in case the main one 'leaks'. Like Chris noted, any leaking fuel gets routed out of a nipple for relatively safe discharge into the carb. (Most auto pumps would discharge any leaking fuel into the crankcase, then the bilge if their diaphragms failed.)

Finally, I'd suggest eliminating the concept of using an auto pump on a marine application...just doesn't make any sense.

Tractor guy,

Avoid using auto parts at all. The ones made for marine though more expensive are designed to be safe in our enviroment. Carbs are deigned to dump the fuel into itself, Altenators and starters are designed to be spark proof. Try Doug Russel for you fuel pump. I bought mine from them last year and have a spare on the bench. Good luck and have fun.

One thought about electric fuel pumps. I have had some electric pumps last over 10 years ! On the other hand, I have mechanical pumps that are still running over 25 years ! Just a thought
