Fuel pump diagnosis

I am going back to Mexico in a month or so and must fix the low fuel flow (I think) issue that I previously posted. I will first do the siphon valve and the filters. If that does not do it, I need to consider the fuel pumps. Can someone post for me the best way to trouble-shoot these two (high and low pressure pumps)? And what gizmos or gages will I need? Whatever they are I may have to bring them down with me.

I do have a good engine on the other side to compare it to.

Thanks

If the fuel pump is not delivering adequate fuel pressure and volume to the engine, the engine may not start or run properly. Low fuel pressure can cause hard starting, a rough idle, misfiring, hesitation and stalling. No fuel pressure will prevent the engine from starting, or will cause the engine to quit running if the fuel pump fails while driving.

John - start with what's in the service manual. Should be check the pressure with a gauge connected to the main rail and verify pressure meets spec at WOT. if your filters haven't been done in a while, I'd plan to change them. You may want to do the initial pressure reading first to get some trend data.

You may also want to get a handful of the proper relays and plan on replacing them, too. they are known failure items having finite lifetimes. Failure modes vary from intermittent to won't engage at all. May want to get spares, too.

As far as the gauge goes, a standard auto type will be fine. i prefer the 'premium' options as they have longer hoses and easy to operate purge valves.
