Fuel pump compatibility

Working on a Johnson 1985 40HP (J40ELCOB) wondering if the VRO off of a 1990 40HP (TJ40ELESR) will work as a replacement for the 1985 model.
Oil mix is not a concern, no longer using VRO for oil mix, premixing fuel in tank.
Dealing with loss of fuel prime. Road has lead to the pump not maintaining fuel flow, now looking at replacement options. I have the 1990 motor for parts just wondering about compatibility of the newer VRO (1990) on the older engine (1985).

Or can a standard fuel pump be put on it (non-VRO)? I see a non oil mixing VRO replacement but it says 3 cylinder only and is still an over priced option.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,
J..

Although I have 30+ years behind me with OMC, interchanging parts is not my line of exxpetise, however..... since you will be using the replacement VRO strictly as a gasoline pump with the oil side being plugged, I see no reason why that that setup couldn't be used.

One question though as you say that you're dealing with a loss of fuel prime.... does the fuel primer bulb have a tendency to go flat when this problem is encountered?..... (fuel restriction?)

Do the following.-----------Find a 48 HP model of the 2 cylinder motor.-------Order that simple pump.---------Install it on the side of the top cylinder ( port side ) arrange hoses as required.

Thanks Joe,
The bulb does not pull flat like a restriction, it will just pull all the fuel out of the bulb and run out of gas and die. You can pump the bulb slowly and keep it running fine under load or at idle.

One thing I am not sure of could the fuel system pull air past the manual choke and loose the ability to pull fuel from the tank? I have seen a drip or two of fuel on the red choke lever so thought if it could leak fuel (very little just a drip or two) could it be pulling air and not allow the system to keep fuel in the line.

Racer,
Thanks for the reply, I'm with you on which pump to buy but not sure I follow what you mean "Install it on the side of the top cylinder ( port side )".

There is a location to mount the non mixing style pump on the side of the block.--------two screw holes with a plug in between.------Remove the plug for the pulse port.--------Mount pump with the gassket.-----------Plug pulse port for VRO.

Thanks Racer! I'll check it out.
