I have replaced my fuel pump on my 1978 350 Mercruiser that has a rebuilt Rochester carb. No idle adjusting screws. It is the exact same pump the was on it previously. I got the pump from Westmarine. The boat has a new tank, fuel line, anti shiphon valve and water fuel seperator. This is a rebuilt engine starting for the first time in the boat. So now it is flooding badly. It won't stop pouring gas down the carb for a minute or so. I know that the oil is being ruined. I an also having a issue with the oil filter not seating and blowing oil into the bilge. Alot. There is not extra gasket stuck there and this is the second new filter to have the same issue. I think there may be extra oil pan gasket material getting in the way but it's hard to see with a mirror or try to remove. I am not sure if the gasket is being blown off or it is getting misshaped as it is tightened to hand tight. The fuel lines are hard line/tubed plumbed to the pump and carb. I suspect the pump is putting out too much pressure. I did install a screened carb filter where there was none there before. I can't figure a simple way to install a pressure gauge to check. I have an old vacuum / pressure gauge that uses hoses. My questions are: is the pump is causing the problem? Can a regulator of some kind be used? If the pressure is reduced will the carb still be ok or does this mean the carb HAS to be rebuilt. I paid $250 to have it rebuilt last June. This is not the way I expected this new engine to treat me. The coil is also getting really hot if I leave the ignition on and it is not running. This is the kind of system that has the resistance wire. My manual seems to say the resistance wire is on the same + terminal with the voltage wire as the resistance wire, but is it suppose to be in line with the power or two seperate lines. The power line is coming from the alternator and the only other wire goes to the distributor on the - side. I left off the interrupt circuit till I straighten this out.The boat has sat up for a while with all this work and I have forotten how it was wired and may need some help with a simple rewire diagram from you all. Thanks as always for your help.
