fuel pump and check valve question

i have rebuilt quite a few johnny rude fp. recently i have one that i cant seem to seat the check valve. this may sound stupid, but where are the check valves? is it the stainless little stamped piece in the housing? when i blow into the outlet, there is air coming out from the inlet meaning the check valves are not working? motor doesnt seem to want to run.

Pictures of the pump and piece you describe ?----------Does the motor run when you hook fuel line directly to the carburetor, bypassing the pump ?

i will post some pictures later this evening. i have a few spare fp's that work. tried them on the 6hp, but the motor will not stay running. im going to clean the carb tonight and see if this helps. carb is a pain to get off and it has the dumb fuel primer.

There is nothing " dumb " about the fuel primer.----It is a step above a " dumb " choke flapper.

its seems that there is too many hoses and places for leaks. the use of plastic on this year motor is amazing. if they had stuck to the original metal design my guess is that the motors would be great.

update,
got the carb apart, this was the worst carb i have ever seen. there was some strange film, that reminded me of synthetic boogers. very slimy and kind of stringy. port to the primer was plugged shut, broke the little nipple off the primer (see stupid plastic piece of poo) i was extremely careful, however careful it wasnt careful enough. primer had all kind of black, sludge and more gooey stringy stuff. same for the carb and plastic bowl. soaked everything in pinesol, rinse in soap and water, then carb cleaner, dawn bath, compressor to blow everything out.
now im just waiting for the jb weld to set. figure at least two coats.
