"i have a 1979 bayliner, with a AQ140A motor and a 270 outdrive. it was running great for a while and now it starts good, gets up on plane good, but after 1 minute or so on plane it starts to bogg out(lose RPM). i sprayed it with carb cleaner and i takes back off.i have replaced the fuel filter, fuel line, and cleaned the carbs. i checked the fuel pump yesterday and it has just under 2 PSI. Does any body have any ideas besides the fuel pump. i am going to replace that today but just wondering if anything else can cause my problems. Please help me."

"Hi,
It could be that the needle valve supplying fuel to the float chamber is sticking in the closed position. The initial 1 minute of good performance is due to the fuel, which is already in the bowl, being used up. The engine is then starved of fuel and stalls. the bowl will eventually fill again at a slow rate, after several minutes. The engine will then start again and repeat the symptoms you describe. This is assuming that all other things such as fuel leaks, fuel pump pressure, condition of fuel filters, condition of ignition components etc have been checked and found satisfactory. The solution is to replace the needle valve with a new unit. I would also clean out the carb as you need to open it up to replace the needle valve anyway."

"Failing other carb problems,

"Failing other carb problems, 2psi fuel pump pressure is the bottom figure of spec. I believe your pump should put out 2-4 psi. Get a VP manual at a marine parts store. You'll use it for a lot of info.

"I AGREE THAT 2 PSI IS LOW. I HAVE SEEN ALOT OF MESSAGES RELATED TO THIS TOPIC, BUT VERY FEW SUGGEST SUGGEST CHECKING VOLUME FLOW TOO!!"

"Iwould go with an electric pump and a manual fuel pressure regulator.
I have a 1980 AQ120B that had so much corrosion in the carb, even after I rebuilt it, that I decided to go electric. So, went to a local parts house, bought an electric pump(2 to 8 psi) and then a regulator. Paid 60 dollars for all of it and have had NO problems at all. LOOK!!!!!!
