please help purchased 454xl with 5 hours use on it. put it in and notice fuel pump wire disconected at the alternater. hooked it up boat runs perfect as far as half way through the four barrels. last half of four barrels it cuts in and out. is it possible original fuel pump not giving enough fuel. let me know what you think thankyou cape breton ps motor is late 90;s all filters are clean

all filters are good all lines are good tank is good. only thought is the eletric fuel pump was disconected so they must of had a different pump system. has anyone ever had problems with the original eletric fuel pumps thanks for the reply jeff

Here's an idea: Seeing it has an electric fuel pump, stick a pressure gage in the line at the carb and see what pressure it generates. Should be 4 to 7 psi.

If your description meant the engine runs fine until the upper rpm range, then yes, concur with a fuel starvation problem.

electric pumps, especial the early generations weren't known as being reliable. Timeframe makes it a Gen V or early Gen VI so a mechanical pump isn't viable. if the filters are clean, see if an anti-syphon valve is used. if so, check it for restriction.

The pump has two key requirements: pressure in the range suitable for the carb and sufficient volume to keep the bowl filled at max RPM. having one without the other will result in a starving condition.

Bad electrical connections and contacts will inhibit proper electric pump operation; may be woth investigating , too.

I believe I would check all the filters first, before I jumped to the fuel pump. Sounds more like you have some water or gunk in the bottom of the canisters and when you try to go to wot it sucks some in, also if you do find some gunk in the filters I would check the fuel bowls in the carbs, there could be some junk laying in there that gets sucked in when you demand it all. good luck...Lee

No relation to the issue other than during hurricane Irene we had a generator available that just would not start or run .... being desperate, we applied the 100% effort to diagnose the problem and sure enough, the main jet was solidly plugged. Started perfectly and ran for days after sitting 12 years
