"I have access to 100 octane leaded aviation gasoline. I'm considering running this in my boat and am curious if anyone here would have any objections. I really don't put that many hours per season on the boat and Aviation Gasoline has about a 3 year shelf life before it starts breaking down (less gum in tank, carbs, fuel lines) I also figure that the lead would be good for valve wear ect, since thats what it was originally desined to run on... will the 100 octane hurt anything vs. the 87 I've been running?

"Your engine is designed to run on 87 octane gasoline so higher octane rating won't do anything to improve efficiency. If you are concerned about varnish and gum, just don't let the gasoline sit for many months in the fuel tank and use gas stabilizer if you are not going to use your boat for awhile.

The operator's manual for the AQ130 further specifies gasoline without lead addititves (you can download the manual from the Volvo Penta website for free).

thanks for the reply. The motor is a '74 so I thought all that was around then was the leaded "regular" gasoline. Therein lies my curiosity with aviation grade gas...

"Justin, that's not surprising, but it has likely to do with how the static ignition timing is set in your engine. When running with regular (87) the timing is 4º-6º, but when running with higher octane it is better to set it at 10º."
