Fuel Gauging

" Are there any reliable "

" Are there any reliable "sending units" or "pickup units" for boat fuel tanks? I have a 30 gallon plastic tank in my bayliner & a lying gas gauge! I know when it's full but when it starts dropping I get real nervous. Also, am I supposed to get the best reading underway or stopped? I would think underway, but I'm not sure if the pickups are designed to compensate for that movement. Any help, or can anyone set me straight? "

" Best reading is at the dock

" Best reading is at the dock with little motion. If the float is installed properly it should compensaate for all but a rough sea. Best thing to do is take a spare can of gas, run the boat until it starves for fuel and note the guage position. Then for future reference you will have an out of gas mark. Kim "

" If all else fails you could

" If all else fails you could use a dip stick, you would have to make one, while refilling from a empty tank when adding known quantities of fuel. Sounds cheesy but they are very reliable. We use them in the aviation industry because all airplane fuel gages are inaccurate. "
