fuel gauge/sending unit problem?

Hi guys, I have a problem with my fuel gauge on my 1986 sea ray sundancer. I bought a new fuel sending unit for the tank due to the other one not working. I checked the old one with my meter an there was no resistance at all when I moved the float up and down. When I connect the wires to the new sending unit, my fuel gauge goes up on full. As I move the float up, my gauge barely moves. I checked my new sending unit and I am getting a resistance as I move the float up and down. Is there a difference in ohms resistance in some gauges and sending units? do I need the proper gauge for this sending unit? or do I have a problem somewhere else. When I connect the wires together at the tank, my gauge goes up on full, so I figure my gauge is working, but I cannot get this sending unit to work. I tried another new sending unit, same model, and still no success. My tank is 1/4 full. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Glenn

The typical resistance range for a fuel indication system is 30 OHMS to 240 OHMS full travel on the sender, If your new sender reads what I have told you than check contunity of wires from sender to guage, and sender to GRN. if that is good you have a bad guage.

Ok guys, i found the problem. I checked the wires and they were good, so I replaced the fuel gauge and now it is working great. So It was a bad gauge. Thanks for the help, and happy boating.
