Fuel Gauge Issue

Have an issue with my fuel gauge. When it is full of gas, it works fine. When it drops down to 3/4, the needle starts jumping from where it really is to full the whole time. Any suggestions?

Sounds normal...It is jumping around because the fuel in the tank is sloshing around causing the float sender to fluctuate.

I would say it would be normal if it were doing it when it was running. But it is doing it if it is running or sitting on the trailer.

I had the same issue with my sender, worked in about the full to 7/8's full then didn't work, it was bad. Search this site by topics as there are a few posts on how to diagnose if your guage is bad or if your sender is bad. First step is to check for loose or corroded connections at the guage and at the sender on your tank, clean and tighten them.

A fuel sender has a OHMS value of ~ 80 ohms to 240 ohms.

It is a variable resistor basicaly.

Disconnect the wires attached at the sender and remove it, look closely at the area of the variable resitor if it is corroaded get a new one!!

get a digital or analog meter and set it to 1k ohms or what ever is close,

with the sender out of the tank connect one lead to where the pink wire went and the other to the top (where the mounting screws went thru.

raise and lower the float very slowly and watch the results. it should be smooth with NO big jumps in readings. if any wierd readings occur buy a new one.

A universal sender is about ~$40.00................replace it.

If you do replace it keep the old so you can make the universal look EXACTLY as the original. Universals are adjustable for many applications. (depth in to tank and float length and possibly a bend)
