Fuel flow?

When attempting to start the port motor for the first time in a few days, it starts for a few seconds, and then stops
Through many attempts, I realize the only way to get the engine to start was to unscrew the water, separator filter and fill it up with that last bit of half inch of fuel, and it starts right up and runs endlessly
Couple hours later, it still works fine
Waiting a few days the same problem occurs.
What are your thoughts?

could add a prime button to allow you to run the electric pumps for a few seconds after it has been sitting...got to be easier and faster than dealing with the fuel filters...

I put the ignition switch on for a full minute prior to trying to start it. I could feel the electric pump vibrating, but that doesn’t mean there’s a tear in the diaphragm on the pump.
The weird part is it runs fine after that endlessly

I looked again, and that engine should have the MSTS control box handling the timing adjustment...on the GM wiring diagram, the fuel pump is powered thru an oil pressure switch and should NOT run with the key at RUN and the engine not running...more of a safety concern than a contributor to the hard start condition...

1 year.
Do you think it’s not sucking the gas hard enough?
It’s a very low pressure fuel pump so it’s hard. All of the fuel pressure gauges are geared towards over 100.

How many times has the tank run to empty?

You didn't provide much info about the engine, but I found this link-

Assuming it's carburated, you might need to move the throttle before cranking- f that works, your carburator needle valve may be leaking.

If it uses fuel injection, you may have an obstruction but we can't know if you don't post more info. Troubleshooting is very different for each.

Thank you I will try that next
What vacuum pressure should I have?
the current crusader spec for electric fuel pumps is a max pressure drop of 2" Hg at the fuel pump....most people I know will settle for 5" Hg at the inlet, mostly as the threshold point for changing the filter...

Yes, it is carbureted. 1994 454XL crusaders.
It is a holly double pumper dual float bowl carburetor

If itsthe OEM carb, its NOT a double pumper...
They would most likely be Rochester Quadrajet- was this after Carver bought the Trojan assets? Most Crusader engines came with Rochester. Can you show your engine, last few digits of the Hull ID and do you have a manual for the boat?

No. the parts listing calls out a 4011 version...q-jets were NLA on the GM standard production builds by 1991 The transition to the Holley's and the Webers, for some, started after the '89 builds were done...

I had the existing carburetors rebuilt twice in the 20 years. I’ve owned it. I’m 80% sure they’re all hollies. I will double check? Don’t have the engine number with me. Possibly the previous owner changed it Hollie’s ?
But knowing the previous owner, he would not spend a nickel on something like that

Thanks- I thought those were disco'd later than '91. My friend's '89 Carver has Quadrajets, but the injected Mastercrafts starting in '93 and into 2000 used Rochester throttle bodies, so that was my time reference.
