Fuel filter

Hi guys, new on here and have a question. I got a '56 Evinrude 3hp Light twin from my friend in really nice condition for sitting 30+ years. Did the coils, points, water pump, carb & plug wires and it fires right up and runs like a top..........until I get down to 1/2 tank of gas. The in tank bronze filter is blocked about 2/3's bottom up. Now I checked on price and it's like $40-50 for OEM replacement Ouch!
My question is: is there any way or product I can use to successfully dissolve the gum/lacquer that has blocked it, or is it toast, and I have to look another direction? Thanks

I'd suggest letting it sit in carburetor cleaner overnight, then clean it off with mineral spirits and pressurized air.

If that doesn't do it, I'd break the filter away from the brass fitting and solder a fine screen mesh to it.

Remove the filter from the tank and backwash it with spray carb cleaner(walmart brand works well)...protect your eyes from any errant spray. If it is still clogged, crack the filter part of it to bypass it and use a "see through" filter from a small engine application. You would cut the fuel line between the tank and carb and use the rubber fuel line at each end of the filter. Some of the filters even come with the rubber lines and clamps. They are available for several diameter fuel lines and easily fit under the engine cover.

Thanks guys, I'd already given the thought to an in-line filter as last resort, but was hoping to find a way to clean the old one to keep it original. I was wondering if soaking the filter in Seafoam would be of any advantage? I've got a heavy dose in the fuel hoping that might make a difference also. I'm in Northern WI and were running out of summer here now and I want to try and get as much run time as I can, while I can. Once the cold weather sets in I've got all winter (heated garage) to play w/it.
I got this motor just to use on our canoe so we can get onto the smaller lakes that we can't with our Lund ProV, so it's not our only option. But your better off in a gunny sack with a Bobcat then in a canoe with my wife if the engine don't work. LOL

Well I soaked it overnight in carb cleaner and it appears that it's still plugged about 3/8" on the bottom. Other than that it seems pretty good. Air blows through it fine. I was thinking yesterday, that if I also had an ultrasonic cleaner to go along w/carb cleaner, the combination would probably do one heck of a job.
Thanks for the help
