fuel filter

I have a mariner 50 - I have fitted a small (2 inch long, 1 inch diameter) in line fuel filter - will this be Ok for the fuel supply rate of my engine?

Where is the filter located? Should be AFTER te fuel pump.

I have fitted the filter between the male outboard fuel connector (bolted to the front of the motor) and the fuel pump - NOT between the fuel pump and the carbs - is this right?

Before the pump is preferred , as the check valves in the pump do not like dirt.
