Fuel and Gas-oil ratio 1982 Mercury 70hp Triple

I have a very fine running this 82 Merc 70 triple. What octane gas do you recommend, and should I run ethanol free and avoid the gasohol? Also, the good book says the motor is designed to run on 50:1. Anyone running 25:1 or other ratios on these older motors? Thanks....Bill
 
Your most important to do on this engine is to replace the water pump impeller at least every two years. No exceptions. These engines had a cooling issue that typically showed up as cooked #1 piston. 50-1 oil to gas (2.6 oz to US gallon) was the design. If you haven't replaced the impeller in recent memory, do so posthaste.

Thank you! I blew a #1 piston on one of these previously, and do not care to do that again. Yes, new impeller is installed.
