"I have a 1999 Mercury 60 hp. The upper shaft bearing exploded due to lack of oil. In oder for me to remove the bearing I have to remove a retainer nut that seems to be frozen. So frozen that the teeth on the nut have broken off when trying to remove the nut. Does anyone have any ideal on how I can get this nut out, without messing up the treads"

"George,

You really need the tool for removing the nut, but if you have already broken the teeth, it will not help. A serious machine shop could remove it for you.

If that is out of the question, you could try carefully drilling small holes in the nut in locations where it is thinnest. Even this will not be easy due to the hardened steel of the nut, but proper drill bits will help. The idea is to create a few weak spots so that you can break the nut. You will need to drill several holes in each location. Lots of patience and extra bits are the key.

Success... By using a Demel tool with a small bit I was able to cut the nut off in sections. There was minor damage to the threads, however a mechine shop will be able to fix."
