"how can i free up a "stuc

"how can i free up a "stuck" motor? it's a 3hp jw-16 johnson seahorse. i disassembled the motor as far as i can ie:, all cowling, head cover, lower unit, carb etc. i filled the cylinders with aerokroil for a few days and it still wont budge. the pistons seem seized. how can i get the crank housing apart to access the connecting rod bolts? i removed all the external bolts but the housing wont come apart. i have a parts manual and the service manual is on it's way. thanks for any help."

"the prob is,when 'freeing

"the prob is,when 'freeing' up an old motor is,..when and IF u get it freed up,enuf to run,...it will self destruct by running w/the the dibris, scored cyl walls, rusted rings, etc .....now,i have heard the stories of freeing one up and its been running for 15 yrs just fine.........well,thats not the 'usual' case....u can free it up,allowing u to overhaul it,would be a better choice...time ,money, etc,it wont be worth it,except for poss sentimental value,or a challenge."

"If you have the head(s&#4

"If you have the head(s)off you may be able to free the pistons by using a wood dowl and lightly hammer tapping the dowl along the side of the piston top...lightly! This may vibrate the oil down to the rings. Try PB brand lubricant-rust remover, it will need to sit a few days, keep soaking it down. Ive never had any luck freeing up stuck engines and usually end up destroying them but learn alot along the way. The past response is correct in assuming much more work then just freeing up. Paint it hot pink and hang it in from the rafters for show!"

"thanks. i only need to free i

"thanks. i only need to free it up to disassemble and restore. i would never run the engine unless it has been properly overhauled. the rest of the motor is in very good shape. is there any way to separate the crank housing half's to access the con. rod bolts? i removed all the bolts and one half of the case moves but does not want to come loose.
my 1936 evinrude was in much worse shape than this one, and it runs beautifully after the rebuild!
thanks again!!!"

"the mag plate and flywheel ha

"the mag plate and flywheel have been removed. i have not removed the reed plate. thanks, will try that!!!"

i removed the reed plate and t

i removed the reed plate and there are no serews. mabey i need to remove the reed plate studs and lift the case half upwards. mabey some locating pins on the bottom section are holding me up?

"Have you removed parts 5 and

"Have you removed parts 5 and 14...if so,it might just be stuck on the aligning pins or from the sealant which was used to seal the two halves together...you can use a propane torch to slightly heat the area around the pins to help loosen them...Don't use any force and don't jam anything between the crankcase halves

i got it! i wasn't "persuading" it enough. i underestimated how tightly it would be stuck after 40+ years.
