Fresh water cooling system flush

"82 Merc 470 bone stock. I am having no cooling problems but would like to perform a routine maintenance on this motor that is new to me. With the muffs hooked up for cooling and the boat out of the water is there a reason I should/could not use an automotive cooling system flush safe for aluminum? I would replace with 50/50 Prestone GO5 and distilled water. Add a fresh thermostat.

I'd suggest a PH balance test kit and check the PH first. This will give you an idea of what's going on inside the E/G side of your cooling system.

Not that you've mentioned over-heating, but I'll be so bold as to suggest that most over-heating issues occur from the sea water side of the system, not the E/G side.
H/E's can become restricted within the interior of the tube bundles, and need routine rodding out.
Some will depend on the water that the boat spends it's time in.
Any restrictions within the exhaust man/riser transfer ports will also have an effect on cooling.

I have read a lot about the exhaust man/riser and its gasket etc. Just no way of knowing its condition other than taking it apart or having some cooling or coolant problem?
