What is the procedure for using a outboard during cold weather? It will be removed from the water each time and stored in a unheated gargage. with the mild weather I am tempted to go fishing but I am worried about my outboard. 25 hp mariner with themostat. will leaving it in the down position allow it to drain and protect it.

If you leave it down it will drain. ----------slowly turn the motor over to drain the water pump.---------------------If there is a chance that ice will be in the water pump than you need to submerge the lower unit at the ramp. Wait for about 10 minutes before starting the motor.
 
One caution: Tiny holes (about an 1/8 ") were drilled in the lower unit to allow water to drain out. If these holes get plugged with crud (which is easy to do) the water can't drain out and....

Poke at the holes you see in the housing down there to make sure they are open.
