[b] Owners of VP outdrives tha

Owners of VP outdrives that tilt up hydraulically NOTE: Do not drive the leg up until it contacts the up-limit bumper and stalls. Doing so will eventually cause the hydraulic ram(s) to fail (leak). They are sold new and in pairs for a king's randsom. DAMHIKT

"There is a 'Beach' limit of which You are allowed to drive 'at low rpm'.
Driving at higher til, the risk is bigger that the joint will rip the bellow to pieces than that the trim cylinders get damaged.
If You need info of howe to use the trim, download the 'owners manual'.

"Point taken on the bellows.
It's an easy thing to do, keep running the tilt up until the leg contacts the stops, I'll bet that's what the majority do. You really have to have someone watch the leg come up and stop it just before it contacts the stop and then take note of the tilt gauge reading and maybe mark it for next time. fwiw."

"I don't mean to pile on the hurddle here.... but in all honesty, we should NEVER take our drives full UP!
Nor should we store the drive in any of the UP positions.
I take a hard line attitude against this due to shortening the drive bellows life span.

Let alone running the engine with the drive Full UP."

"Ricardo, your point about not storing the drive up is well taken, however in my case, I store my boat in a paved storage area and in order to lower the drive completely, I have to lower the trailer tongue all the way down to the ground which then does not allow rain to run off the boat's cover like it does when the bow of the boat is up and it then has a tendency to pool up on the cover and eventually leak through the cover into the boat. Any suggestions? Would I be at least better off by lowering the drive down as far as it will go when the bow is up?"

"Bob.
Just lower it as far as possible. In my opinion drive should be off once a year for service/inspection, and winter storage is the perfect time.
As for boats in water, leave the drive all the way down. I have experienced sticks and debris floating around in harbors getting stuck between drive and transom. Then when lowering the drive, the bellow has been punctured!!!
Bellow lifetime? I changed them yearly on all my customers boats, and always used the originals!!
The cost of repairs after a 5 year old broken bellow far succeeds the cost of yearly change!"
