forward gear

I have 79 evinrude 35 horse that wont stay in forwaed gear when you open the throtle . Can someone out there tell me what i may hve to do to correct this. Thanks.

Is this engine new to you, and if so, has this problem existed since day one?

If you've had the engine for some time (how long?), when did this problem pop up, and did you or anyone else do maintenance of any kind on the engine just before this problem came to be?

If motor has remote throttle control, disconnect it at the engine. Then manually shift the engine into forward. Shift control into forward. See if cable lines up. If it does not, it could be out of adjustment, or need to be replaced. If engine still won't stay in gear with cable disconnected likely clutch dog, gear, or both.

I bought the motor used and don't know history,tried it yesterday. And when refering to remote does this mean cables? Thank you both for responses this is a great forum but still need ideas. Thanks. netmaker
