Forum Post Insert Problem?

This site, this particular forum, has always been a popular fast moving area.... always! However, for some time I've noticed a slowing down of posts being inserted by its members.

Days have went by recently with possibly only a couple of new posts being entered daily, and some of them were simply add on replies to existing posts. Today, unless someone has entered one while I'm typing this one, there have been absolutely no posts entered, new or add on posts.

This has never happened previously that I can remember regardless of the time of the year. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I having a computer problem of sorts?

Well I am new to this site .[ After 40 years of boating I took off a decade to hang with my son as he was into MX racing which was time, and money consuming, a lot more than boating believe it or not.Could not afford both and he has slowly switched gears and is now heavily into hunting , along with waterfowl , which turned into a green light for me to purchase in the last 2 months three boats and a total of 9 motors,2 of them for parts .] Anyway this site is the slowest site to boot up and move from post to post. I know the moderator said they were going to do something to speed it up but the results are the same as it ever was.It gets somewhat frustating to wait to "navigate" and maybe people are fed up with the slowness of the site.

I have no problems with the speed of the site. One of the faster and more reliable of the sites I use I think.

I have, like Joe, noticed a big drop in the number of posts recently. It is the end of the season for many so a drop is perhaps likely.

While on the subject of the site.
I cannot see the point of pushing fuel mix questions and age/model questions into separate daughter forums. Achieves nothing useful as far as I can see and complicates the navigation ... My 2 pennyworth!

If they could just make it less of an ordeal to include photos, I think more people would use the site.
Whats the problem with including photos.

I have a Photobucket account. I upload pictures to that and paste them in from there. That is my preferred option because once the pictures are on Photobucket I can use them wherever I want.

If you dont have a Photobucket account you can post them as attachments. But that does look a bit complicated :( I guess there is a limit and I dont suppose you can use them anywhere else.

Goober..... I have no problem with the site's speed, opening, moving from post to post, etc. Strange that you are encountering that problem if all other sites function at an acceptable speed for you, wonder if that could be a Internet Provider connection problem? My only concern is with the drop of membership input..... a "wonder where all the people have gone" type of thing. (Joe Reeves)

hi joe and all others. i read this site just about every day for past several years, and i too have noticed a drop in posters. i think it's becuse they revised there site (marine engine) which alot of people don't like. just my opinion tom f

I must admit I don't like the latest revision of the site ..... but its not that bad.
Things change It takes a little while but you soon get the hang of them

I used to like this site and use it all the time.It does not work well with my browser; Internet Explorer7. My browser
works well with other sites. I would bet other users have the same problems. This site is verrry slooow for me.
The old version was super nice!!!!!

I always get error on page when it is finished loading. It says it right now. I have a computer that has windows xp on it and I cannot even post to the forums because the post quick reply button doesnt show up. It quit working with the website update. Dont know if other xp users are having the same problem.

Change you browser to Google Chrome. It's soooo much faster you'll wonder why you put up with IE for so long.
A few minor snags it has to be said. The odd site that wont work properly and a problem with PDFs since the last revision of Adobe Reader but the increased speed for everything else is well worth the little niggles.

Joe, I've been a member on this site since Apr 2010 and have also noticed a drop in postings. I'm no computer wizz but something seems wrong here. When I first came on it was an excellent site and I sure hope something changes. There were always more postings.

I have'nt been posting to this site simply because I've been scrambling lately due to the enconomy. Boating in here Michigan, lets face it, is on it's ass. Very little time to fool with my own outboards, let alone other peaple's. Half of the boats around here have been either reposessed, or sitting in craddles on shore all year....

Thanks Joe and all who have posted feedback here.

Joe's initial questions is about why there is a drop in the number of posts in the Johnson/Evinrude category. The short answer is that I don't really know for certain. The longer answer is that there do seem to be some issues for some users regarding the new board and they might be having an effect. I will list and address some of the issues below, but let me first reiterate that I am confident this board format is better than the old one. I know that's hard to believe if you are one of the users who is finding it to be slow, but from where I sit I am firmly behind this format. It is more stable and secure, more feature rich, better for photo and attachment posting, better indexed with search engines, better able to integrate into other areas of the site, etc. It might take some time, but I think many of you will agree eventually.

Some of the issues that might be resulting in a short term drop in posts:

1) When we switched to the new board registered users had to choose a new password and follow the instructions to do it. That process may have frustrated some users and caused them to leave.

2) The speed issue that is mentioned above and has been discussed in a post on the Mercruiser category as well. We have made a number of changes that should improve the loading speed and we are making some more changes this week. It has been a difficult problem to pin down because it is not effecting all users and there don't seem to be many common factors among the users that are effected. Loading the main page of the forum and the loading the individual forum categories (such as the Johnson/Evinrude category) seems to be much of the problem. We are trimming down those pages and and will be trying a new utility that improves the caching to reduce the number of times that the site is required to retreive redundant information from the database. I hope users will be patient with this we do feel your pain and we are working on it.

3) The added sub categories to the Johnson/Evinrude forum for "oil/fuel mixture" , "propeller selection", and "model year id". We felt that so many of the visitors had questions related to those issues that they warranted their own categories. For a user with those questions they will have an easier time browsing within one of those specific categories and searching within those categories than in the overall Johnson/Evinrude category. The problem is that those sub-categories occur and the bottom of the Johnson/Evinrude list of messages and may not get noticed. We are looking at how to arrange them and might display them nearer the top of the Johnson/Evinrude list.

4) It's a slower time of year for boating in the Northern Hemisphere, and was therefore the only viable time for us to make the format change, but a drop in users this time of year might be more noticeable than a drop in the summer.

5) The layout of our site homepage changed also and the link to the forum might not be as prominent as it should be. We are looking at how to improve that.

Our overall website traffic is significantly higher now than it was this time last year, but I agree with Joe that the postings seem to be down at the moment.

This board has always been a reliable resource for marine engine tech issues and has had the reputation of being friendly, respectful, and on topic. I think if we follow that theme and work out the bugs of the new format we will see a rebound in use.

Thanks everybody!

Best regards,
Andrew

Keep up the good work!
I cruise 3 or 4 outboard forums and multiple Craigslist sites,
And it seems like all are quieting down right now.
I think it's the economy[allways easy to blame] or that summer is over!

I'm not experencing any problems with the site being slow loading, or anything else. Seems the same to me.

1 My $.02. Slow because of economy and time of year.
2 Some recent (knowledgeable) posters were less than polite.
3 People like me are always asking for help, and others likely are tired of giving out the same old answers.
4 Is the Merc forum suffering the same way?
5 I have liked this site, it is fast, yes pics are a pain to load, mostly because Joe is here.
6 Joe, you are well known enough, you could likely start a paid site, www.joereeves.com
7 I do find a good read here most of the time. I do rarely post though, mostly because I know next to nothing.
