Can anyone tell me the Volvo Penta designation for the 1964 Ford 140 hp 221 ci V8? Are there different designations for right and left rotation? Thank you

VP used a 221 cu. inch V8 in 1964, but it wasn't a Ford. It was a Volvo V8 (B36) based unit called the AQ180 and it made 180HP in i/o trim in 1963 and 1964.

As an inboard, VP used the B36 V8 from about 1959 to 1964 and called it an MB36 rated at 120HP I believe, and later an MB36B when the B36B was introduced in 1963 at higher HP.

More information. The motor is marked Ford in several locations and the valve covers are marked Interceptor 140 hp. The 221 ci is a Winsor series. Perhaps my error is thinking it is VP instead of pure Ford.

yeah, Volvo didn't use that one. If it was an i/o, probably coupled to a Dana or Eaton or something.

Eaton, Glastron, and perhaps a few more installed Ford engines in front of the Volvo Penta out drives, and perhaps even some with Volvo Penta MS Inboard transmissions.

I cannot tell you anything about the 221 engine, but can suggest that there was only the Standard LH rotation engine used with Volvo Penta. The cone clutch will not allow for a Reverse RH rotation engine. We simply reverse the out drive or transmission direction.

.

  1. This is definately a RH rotation engine.
  2. Did manufacturers other than Volvo make the Eaton Model 14 outdrive?
1. Are you viewing the rotation from the flywheel end, or from the front cranskaft end?
Industry standard determines rotation as though viewed from the flywheel end.

2. Eaton did have their own drive way back when, but some Volvo Penta drives were labeled "Eaton" by Eaton.
Same with some Chrysler and Glastron labeled drives.

Left image = Std LH rotation................... Right image = Reverse RH rotation

I'm looking at the flywheel end. I discovered it was a RH rotation when I tried to find a replacement starter back about 1970. I ended up having the original starter rewound. It is also cast with the RH rotation firing order on the intake manifold. When I bought the boat I was told it was a VP but the block is Ford, the engine valve covers are labeled 140hp Interceptor and the outdrive is labeled Eaton Interceptor. At this point I believe this to be a non VP setup and I should probably be in the Interceptor Forum.
