Did Mercury buy Force ou and

Did Mercury buy Force ou and if so when I am looking for an outboard and was told that this particular Force motor was actually a Mercury.. How can I tell by the serial numbers??

I have seen a few of these engens around and on the cowl it reads "FORCE by mercury" and i belive they are 96 modle year
