Force 85HP OB

slacker

Hi
I new to this site and new to boating. I have a Force 85hp OB, when i have the ears on it it runs fine I can throttle it all the way up has a slight skip.
When I put it in the water going thru the wake zone she will do 4 mph one out of the wake area as soon as i throttle it up she stalls.
I just bought this last august, prior owner had it winterized the winter before and it never went in the water last year. She had it running to burn off the fogger before I bought it.

You should have posted in the Force section, but no matter.

You have "cooties in the carbs".

Your symptoms are classic "clogged" jets.

That will require that all 3 carbs be removed, disassembled, cleaned/soaked and then reassembled with new gaskets and seals - possibly rebuilt.

The 85 Force was a very "cobbled" together model (just in the 1988 model year there were 40 - yes, forty, different versions of the 85 horse Force) so would need to know your exact model to see what parts are still available.

Some of the 85 Forces used very early Walbro carbs and parts are scarce. Most used Walbro's that Merc stopped installing on their own motors in the late 70's/early 80's so parts are still available but limited....

so if she had it winterized in 2008 didnt use in in 2009 other than to burn of the fogger could that be caused be the gas problem ethanol ?

Yes, could be the cause.

Ethanol enhanced gas actually burns cleaner and runs cleaner than gas without ethanol.

The two biggest problems with it are: first, it attracts water (moisture) and eventually the (wet) ethanol separates from the gas and second, the ethanol "scrubs" all the deposits (varnish, film etc) from the fuel system which ultimately clog the jets.

So even a motor that has been winterized, if it sits long enough, can still develop clogs.

If a motor will sit more than a single (winter) season - say more than 4 months or so, it's best to drain all the filters and remove the carbs (if equipped) and physically drain the bowls - because eventually, even that stablized gas sitting in them will phase separate and go bad...
