I have a Force 50 (1984) on a pontoon and used primarily at low rpm and trolling. This Spring a local engine mechanic replaced the old standard plugs with surface gap plugs. It ran about 4 hours and quit - one of the surface gap plugs was faulty (he said). What I'm wondering is if a surface gap plug should be used on this old engine. Any advantage?

thanks

"Bob, I believe the original plugs were Champion UL-4J's.

Most plugs from factory were put there because that's what worked best for the designer of the ignition system.

Cross referencing to another plug is a bad practice since even though they show as "being the same" often times the resistance is different and can cause anything from a subtle to a very notacable difference."
