"I have a 1989 XP150 that's running hot. I have had divertors replaced, new thermostats, water pump and still have one side running hotter than the other . One runs 140 deg. and the other runs 190 deg. Any clue as to why ?"

"You haven't mentioned hav

"You haven't mentioned having your overheat warning horn sounding off so I assumne it has not.

If the water deflectors have been installed properly, I would suspect that some salt deposits exist that might be interfering with the water flow OR the thermostats (for some reason) are of different heat ranges OR a bypass valve assembly is malfunctioning.

NOTE.... The normal operating range of the thermostats (opening value) if memory serves me right is around 148° which makes me wonder how that one bank can be running at 140°. Normally the associated bank will run somewhat hotter than the thermostat opening value.

Switch the thermostats to see if the readings switch with it."

"Joe,yes the overheat horn has been going off. This boat hasen't been in salt water. Is the bypass vlv that you're talking about also called the popet vlv?The mech said that the popet vlv was melted. He also said that he found a small rock that was disturbing the flow."

"Joe,the rock that I was talki

"Joe,the rock that I was talking about was not found in my motor."

"Yes, the bypass valve is also

"Yes, the bypass valve is also referred to as the poppet valve.

I would start from scratch, meaning drop the lower unit. At the exhaust housing, lay a straight edge across it and measure up to the bottom of the water tube. Make a note of it.

Now, measure from the surface of the lower unit upwards to that measurement you made a note of. That tells you exactly where the bottom ot the water tube will be in relation to the water tube grommet within the water pump housing. It should be inserted completely within the grommet.

If not, someone most like hit the water tube at some time when installing the lower unit and pushed/bent the tube upwards.

Dismantle the water pump and inspect it completely to make sure that all is as it should be..... water tube did not fold the grommet over, the seal between the pump housing and plate did not slip out of place, etc.

Melting that poppet valve...... the warning horn would have came on long before that could have taken place. When did the engine last run properly and what has happened since then that might have some bearing on this problem.

What are the cylinder compression readings?"
