Foot won't go back on 4hp2str merc

I am stumped, I did my first carb clean, put back together, two pulls purrrring right along. Pulled out impeller replaced impeller and gaskets , piece of cake, trying to put foot back for two hours. Motor is in danger of becoming scrap metal, had to walk away. The clamp for the shift rod gets turned away from where it should point when I do get it all the way together, I could tighten it with wrench I suppose at that angle but that sure ain't how it came apart...HELP?

Put the gearbox in neutral and the shift handle in neutral on the motor. The prop should spin free then carefully put the ghearbox in and turn the flywheel clockwise to line up the splines and toy with the shift handle in both directions to line up the shify splines. Once up tighten the nut above the prop and see if it shifts gears you must turn the prop as your shifting to line up the clutch.

Never did figure how to get the 'gearbox in neutral' but managed to get the foot back up but no shift, tried wiggling everything, going to start over in morning. Don't really get why it should be so fussy to put back as the only parts you can manipulate kinda have to go back one way...grrrrrr...

O.K. that makes sense, and the serial number is 0T something, have to look at it in morning, it's a 2006 Mercury, and to take the foot off you pop a rubber plug off the shank and access the window hole close to the foot. In reverse you can loosen the clamp (brass blocks with thru bolt) bolt and pull the foot. I know this cause I saw a YouTube where a guy took a Mariner apart. The videos of the Mercurys didn't show that and I guess they were older models. That is the full extent of my knowledge, lol! Another tech over at MicroSkiff just said it would be easier if I had a manual as they describe how to line up splines, etc. He is usually pretty detailed in his info, must be tired this evening, or figures I'm a lost cause, haha...thanks for the help, I can relate to the vice grip idea I was scared to force anything til I was sure...

SER.#0T720239 - 2004 apparently, I got it in 2006 from an old Marine who had back surgery and it didn't go well. Guy was haggling with him at yard sale about to beat him down 200.00 off his price so I just gave him his asking price. Never did figure to use it really, just ticked me off...anyway it has two hours total run time, and now I am looking into small boat for creeks and rivers in coastal area. As it did go all the way up yesterday but would not shift, I think maybe the gearbox being in neutral could be the answer, now that I know it's safe to put some grips on it and turn it. Appreciate your time.

The grips didn't produce neutral b ut there was a distinct click, hope I didn't cause myself more work, but the manual is on the way so I'll give you a shout when I try the manual out...thanks again for your time...

Assuming this is a single cylinder Merc...

1. Flip the motor over and rest it on the flywheel.

2. Using a flashlight, look down into where the shifter rod goes. If it's not EXACTLY centered in the hole, you'll need to fashion a '*****' out of wire and maneuver it until it is. Use the opening in the housing about a foot down.

3. If you have a pencil grinder, taper the shifter shaft (onthe LU) to a point--Merc did that on later models.

4. I assume you know where F - N - R is (and that's NOT obvious on some of these with their backasswards shifter pattern). The throttle can only be opened in Forward, so that's an indicator. Put the top and bottom shifters in forward.

5. Finagle the water tube into that tube extension coming from the water pump, then get the drive shaft to engage (turn the prop to help).

6. When you're about an inch from all the way, carefully wiggle the shifter until the splines engage.

Don't give up! These are dogs to reassemble, but after you do you'll have a really nice motor.

Agreed! "Slanters" have made me learn a few new words!

Jeff

PS: The same 'designers' made it shift backasswards, and created the Suicide Six (AKA Dock Wreckers).
