Flywheel Puller Bolt Question

"I've been trying to find

"I've been trying to find out the size of the bolts for pulling the flywheel on my 1996 9.9 4-stroke Evinrude ... for over a week. Even called Evinrude this morning ... to no avail!

I'm pretty sure they are one of the following sizes:

5/16"-18 (SAE coarse)
5/16"-24 (SAE fine)
M8-1.25 (metric coarse)
M8-1.00 (metric fine)

I've tried all 4 size bolts at the local hardware store, but none of them want to screw in with just hand pressure ... and I'm afraid to try using a wrench until I'm positive what the correct size is.

Anyone got the correct information?"

What are the rest of the bolts

What are the rest of the bolts on the engine.Inch sizes or metric sizes. Assuming all inch sizes then 5/16" x 18 is the most likely.

Remember though you must use bolts with a high tesile strength ie SAE grade 8.

"The installation instructions

"The installation instructions that came with the electric start kit that I'm trying to install describes the lengths of all the screws/bolts in millimeters! No mention of the other dimensions though.

I can take the 35mm starter bolts to the hardware store and see if the metric nuts fit ... and if they do, can I then assume that the bolts for the flywheel are also metric? Still doesn't tell me what the thread pitch is though!"

"Could You please give the eng

"Could You please give the engine model number. If it is the Hong Kong one, power head might be in mm, if it is a US made probably inches! Need a better reference to pick the right one."

So ... are you saying I should

So ... are you saying I should be using 5/16-18 or 5/16-24?

BTW ... how did you determine mine was a US model?

"It has been some years since

"It has been some years since I last had a flywheel off on that model, but I think to remember that none of the bolts in the original OMC puller set worked!
Try to clean out the treads from paint, which is probably what makes You have difficulties in finding the exact size.
The Hong-Kong models were made in 8 and 9.9, US were 9.9 and 15 (bigger displacement) Think to remember the Hong Kong started with H in model number, similar to the B in the Belgium made models."

"well undoubtably a thread gau

"well undoubtably a thread gauge would be the easiest way to determine the thread per inch...............otherwise you can find something that will fit into the hole ---- measure the depth of the threads and count them then you can take your depth and threade count and do the math to make them reach an inch...and voila you have your htread count

your model # tells the make, etc.....

see here http://www.skoterskroten.com/img/arsmodellstabell.pdf"

"I finally figured it out! 5/1

"I finally figured it out! 5/16"-24 is the correct bolt size ... they screwed right in, and the flywheel popped right off. Electric start kit is installed and tested (even with the bad instructions from OMC) ... works like a charm!

My wife can now crank the motor ..."
