Flywheel key shreads 1975 40 hp

My 40 HP, 1975 Evinrude, 40554C keeps shreding the flywheel key. I have cleaned closely and replaced 3 times with a shop correct key. Anyone have any ideas please.

Thanks

Re: Flywheel key shreads

You need to lap the two tapers together to get a proper fit !!--------------The key does not drive the flywheel, the taper fit does that.---------------Valve grinding compound and a bit of time.-------------Make sure you torque to 105 FT-LBS after.

Re: Flywheel key shreads

A technical term so to speak-------------------------You smear some valve grinding compound on the taper.--------Put the flywheel on ( minus the key of course ) and rotate the flywheel vigorously( crankshaft stationary ).------------------Remove and clean to observe results ( progress )-----------------repeat untill all of the surfaces have taken on the matt grey finish.

Someday in the future ( the internet is a humble beginning ) --------------Mankind will be able to go to a clinic and plug into a computer to instantly download the knowledge / experience of a skilled athlete / doctor / mechanic / pilot etc etc into your own brain in a matter of an hr or so.------------The time will come , we ourselves may not see it but our grand kids will.

As a member of mankind that intends to be around for another 14, 15 years or so..... I think I'll skip that download :)
