Flywhee noisy when cranking over.

96 25hp mercury Tracker, sn OG309267.
Flywheel. Noisy not engaging like it should. Bendix gear seems to have too much play back and forth.
Ringear feels like sharp edges too and bottom you can feel running your finger over them.

Thanks, just never saw the top and bottom flat areas of the ringear worn like that. Teeth actually look pretty good, they don't look worn?

Take starter apart and inspect bushings / magnets.

Starter is brand new OEM from mercury with a 1 yr warranty. My customer installed starter, solenoid, and new battery. Then they brought to me because of no start, found bad low side ign coil (open). Installed engine started up but when cranking it sounded terrible. I bench tested, and amp tested under load. Wasn't going to disassemble a brand new factory starter. And dealer wants motor brought in so he can diagnose?
I'm just looking for experienced help on if anyone has seen a ringear that has high spots on the flat side top and bottom when you run your finger from inside to outside of gear.
