Flushing question??

I have a 2004 250 efi with a hose connection fresh water flush out just under the power head on the back of the motor. My question is does the motor need to be running while this unit is in operation or can i flush it while it is shut down. Muff's at the lower unit don't work because the front of it has intake holes in it and i'am in a wet slip. Thanks for the read and how do you flush yours?

I believe either way will work on or off, up or down.It would work better if engine was hot and thermostats were open.Owners manual should say.Dont tell me wife tossed it out.

Thanks johnny for input. I do try to to flush after it's been run and stats are open makes good sense.
