"Hello I just had to replace an impeller and thermosat on a 1999 Volvo 4.3L GI Raw Water intake.

My question is when using flushing muffs should water come out of the prop exhaust or just out the intake holes on the lower unit? I overheated, cuaght it quickly and believe the failed impeller to be the root however I want to be sure befoe dropping the boat back in the water...any other way to test the sytem with the muffs?"

On an Mercruiser Alpha One the water comes out several places. Not sure on a V-P. Mine was always in the water.

"Well she runs cool on the water 5 Hour test. But I am having trouble when I am flushing the motor up on trailer. Back flushed all the hoses and seems to be free, how do I get the water out of muffs to circulate through motor?"

You have to run it long enough

You have to run it long enough for the thermostat to open. That may be what's tricking you.

Using muffs on VP outdrives so

Using muffs on VP outdrives sometimes doesn't work. Some drives have a water pickup port at the very bottom of the drive that is not covered by the muffs when flushing. This hole causes a loss of suction. I recommend submerging your drive in a water tub with your garden hose in it. Ensure all ports are covered by water. What I have done on my boat is install a "t" in the raw water input line to my raw water pump so I can hook my garden hose to it.

Good point. I used to remove the hose going to the raw water pump and stick a hose in it.

"Thanks I think those are good suggestions afterall I know she is keeping cool when she's in the water, I will find a good tub and try that way then maybe later install a "T", I am glad to know I am not the only one who has ever experienced the lack of suction.HAHAHA MY BOAT DOESN'T SUCK!! Glad you guys replied, I didn't want to tear apart the bellows and remove the lower unit."
