Flushing Closed System

PTG

I just flushed the antifreeze and replaced with new in my 454 Crusader (Starboard) and it was, to say the least, a yoga experience to drain from block plugs and manifolds in such tight quarters. Before I start the Port engine I was wondering if there was an easier way?

Thanks for passing along your expertise.

not that I'm aware of.

many describe it in a similar manner.

Adding valves to the block pipe plug holes can help contain some of the mess - of course, you need to have the plugs out to install the valves so it won't help much this time.

It's a bit of cat and mouse with the plugs and the holes that can't be seen. To make this feel better, do it one time on a hot engine. Then, future times will seem easy! Use a non-adjustable wrench that fits, too.

PTG - It is a major pain, I put 1/4" ball valve in place of the plug at the low point on each exh manafold then use a barb fitting on the outlet to attach tygon tubing to when I drain the manafold (old style log type of manafolds), when done I replace the barb fitting with the 1/4" plug, I get a little over 1gall from each manafold but that still leaves around 6 gallons to get out of the block and Hx.
Then on the 2" hose from the Hx to the Circ pump I am thinking about adding a Tee fitted with a 1/2" valve. The 2" brass/bronze T is pretty expensive around 50 bucks and the tailpieces to connect the 2" hose to the Tee are about 25 bucks each. I saw that mercruser uses a plastic tee with a plug on their preformed hose that connects the 2" return outlet of the Hx to the circ pump which gave me the idea except I would probably use the bronze or brass fittings and use 'perfect seal' on all joints.

I am working on my port engine now and will probably install the 2" tee when I makeup the connections the Hx, I sure hate pulling that 2" wire reinforced hose which was installed when I removed the Hx last week, had to cut it off.

Anyone else try to make draining the 8 gallons of coolant an easier or less messy experience?
