"I have an Evinrude 9.9 that I'm the second owner of, and the first owner said he never tuned it up aside from storing it in a heated garage in the winter and draining the fuel at the end of every season. Model number is E10RCNS, so I would guess that it's a 1982?

I've only done a bit of reading on the basics of outboard motors, so I'm not really sure where to start with what I've learned so far. Most of my mechanical experience is with engine and suspension tuning on autocross/track cars, and road bicycles.

The Evinrude 9.9 starts up alright, but the carbs get flooded easily if you push the fuel line pump too hard. It doesn't have a tendency to die when idling, but there are a few times that it does so. Everything on the motor is original and never been replaced. Only ran in fresh water. The lower gear casing body (I think that's what it is; it's the part that encompasses the prop shaft and the fin of the motor) is probably in the worst condition visually, because it looks like there's about 2 inches sliced off the bottom fin. Will the entire casing need to be replaced to repair that?

My main concern though is what to do with the engine this spring to get her running better. I've read about changing the gaskets, cleaning the carbs, disassembling and cleaning and re-assembling the entire engine, etc. Where do I start?"

you need to change the water pump, clean the carb, new spark plugs, etc.........

you have some work ahead of you if its never been tuned........and yes it is a '82

a manual is a must if you are going to be doing the work yourself.........heres some good reading on those http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Johnson%209.9_15.htm

it has most everything you will probably need....to get you started anyhow"

"thanks!!! I did overlook the spark plugs, which had been replaced in the past, but when I acquired the engine, the ends were reaaally gummed up. They were alright after I brushed them down with some gasoline, but if I'm pulling everything apart, I think I might replace those too.

That link you posted for me was EXACTLY what I was hoping to find on the internet! Whoever wrote that article is definitely my kind of git'er done person.

Thanks again

"dont forget,to do a good de-c

"dont forget,to do a good de-carb procedure..gets the carbon out of the internals,of which,is a killer of 2 strokes....improves idle and starting too...but u dont use carb cleaner!!!!!"

"I believe JWBmarine is talkin

"I believe JWBmarine is talking about Carbon residue on the pistons (which is common and fine if taken care of) from burning gas and oil. The spray helps burn off the excess carbon on the heads, cleaning out the carburators is a different task."
