first time out, running rough

Hello gentlemen,

I have a 165 inline 6 with a #1 drive. She's running real rough from 600 rpm to about 1500 rpm. After about 2000 rpm it smoothes out and runs good. She ran great last summer and the only thing I changed from last summer is I added a primer bulb in the fuel line. I checked the timing and its good. The engine temp is good. It starts up just fine. The engine just shakes pretty bad. It's not the outdrive because the engine still does it when its out of gear. I thought maybe the fuel is the culprit but I did add stabil last fall and a little sea foam last week. Also, the fuel I buy does not contain ethanol. One other detail, my fuel line contains a fuel filter, new primer bulb, water seperator, then the pump. I also changed the oil, fuel filter, water seperator, oil filter, and outdrive oil last week.

Any thoughts?

thanks

primer bulbs are for outboards - not approved for use on i/o's

I would start by removing that. if no better, I'd head for the points, distributor cap, and plugs

and while servicing the points, have a good look at the springs and weights in the distributor to see if the advance mechanism isn't all rusty/gummed up

I took the primer bulb off, cleaned out the fuel tank and put fresh fuel in. Problem still exists. The distributor cap, points, rotor, condensor where all changed last year and I re-checked the points gap today. The timing seams to be jumping around alot though. Bondo, what can I do about the low-speed circuit in the carb? Can it be cleaned?
Hystat, where are the springs and weights in the distributor? Underneath the points?

Electronic requires less service. No dwell to set. Points will always function even when worn. If you keep the old set up you should carry an extra set along with a new condenser, on the boat.

you say you have a fuel filter inline and a fuel water sep ?

What is that inline fuel filter one like a lawnmower. Remove that also. There is a fitting that enters the carb there is a filter there.

And the bell type fuel pump has a filter on it.

And yes you probably need to open the carb and rebuild it.
